Las Palas, in Fuente Álamo de Murcia, hosted the second Subida al Mingrano on Saturday 31 October, an 18-kilometre trail race organised by Club Deportivo Portichuelo with support from the Fuente Álamo and Mazarrón town councils and the Region of Murcia Athletics Federation. The start and finish were at the Las Palas school, and the race counted towards the 11th Region of Murcia Trail Running League.
The event also had a charitable side: part of the proceeds goes to the Association for Mastocytosis and Related Diseases, supporting research and treatment for these rare conditions. Alongside the runners there was a non-competitive 12-kilometre hike, and even the kit list carried a message: everyone brought their own drinking container, since the organisers do away with plastic cups.
The results show 232 finishers, 175 men and 57 women. Antonio Martínez Ardil won in 1:16:00, 1:44 clear of second place. Mayte Vera Parra took the women's race in 1:32:01 with a wide margin of 5:16 over the next runner.
The weather was more than acceptable for an autumn trail race in the Campo de Cartagena. The 9:30 start came at about 16 degrees with very high humidity and almost no wind; the morning warmed to nearly 21 degrees as the sky opened up, with no rain at all, so the closing kilometres felt warmer.
Anyone planning to enter next year should take note: the race is run in semi-self-sufficiency, with aid stations at kilometres 5.2, 10 and 14.6, and compulsory kit including a drinks container, phone and thermal blanket. The fully marked route combines track and trail, and every entry supports a good cause.
